WASHINGTON HOSPITAL was being threatened with closure. It needed to raise $190 million through an independent citizens’ bond to pay for a seismic retrofit project. Getting more than the two-thirds majority required for the measure to pass looked like an impossible task. Because 43% of the likely voters were receiving their health care from the Kaiser Permanente consortium. We made local residents the stars in Washington’s integrated campaign and galvanized the entire community. As a result, over 80% rallied behind them to vote “yes.” Today, with a little help from our subsequent campaigns, the Hospital has grown to include a Neuroscience Institute, Gamma Knife Center and its own cable tv channel.
